SacTown talks is happy to interview Kate Whelan of the California Events Coalition (CEC). The California Events Coalition represents 3 million Californian career event professionals who work in live events, such as caterers, event planners and musicians. She discusses her start as a wedding planner and event coordinator, the creation of the CEC to respond to AB5, and the Coalition’s shift in focus due to COVID. They discuss the problem of PPP loans, the lack of funding for and recognition of the event services industry, the need for additional support by both the federal and state governments, the shift toward some digital events, hopes and fears for 2021, and the “wish I was there campaign” to support the industry.
